Bendigo TAFE awarded three scholarships to young Aboriginal women at yesterday’s Weenthunga Bendigo Health Day: Women’s Talk.

The scholarships were presented at The Reservoir Hotel to students who have demonstrated a keen interest in undertaking health courses.

The scholarship recipients were selected by a panel consisting of Weenthunga Committee members and staff.

Bendigo TAFE nursing coordinator Jasmine Vendargon expressed her delight at supporting this initiative, “Bendigo TAFE is proud to partner with the Weenthunga Health Network to support young Aboriginal women towards achieving their educational goals.”

Spokesperson for the Weenthunga Health Network Stephanie Armstrong said the scholarships will go a long way to supporting the young women with their studies, “The scholarships available to the girls from Bendigo TAFE provide much needed support with educational items such as text books. These scholarships help to recognise and celebrate the girls’ pathways in education as well as show that organisations can play their part in our community.”

Approximately 19 Indigenous women aged between 15 and 17 years old attended the 19th July health day. The event focused on raising awareness of living healthily and accessing health training and career paths. The students currently attend secondary schools and colleges in Bendigo, Melbourne and Castlemaine.

Bendigo TAFE’s nursing and allied health teachers also provided a presentation on training options on the day.
