TESOL ELICOS Bendigo TAFE’s English Language ELICOS courses for international students can help improve your English language skills for personal development or prepare you for direct entry into TAFEs and universities. Our levels range from elementary to English for Academic Purposes. New English classes start every week and depending on your level, your study duration can range from 5 to 40 weeks. In our English language courses, you will learn to: • Write essays and reports • Give presentations • Communicate with confidence in English • Research and reference • Study independently • Develop your grammar and vocabulary • Synthesise ideas through activities from the classroom and through excursions. When you arrive, you will receive an orientation and will be guided on your study goals. You will also receive regular feedback from our teachers as you progress. For students who successfully complete certain levels of their English courses, they can take a direct entry to our vocational courses (TAFE). For ELICOS applications and enquiries, please contact us on: +61 1300 175 176 bendigotafe.edu.au/international CERTIFICATE IV IN TESOL (TEACHING ENGLISH TO SPEAKERS OF OTHER LANGUAGES) Course Code 10695NAT Direct entry / Semester one and Semester two intakes This nationally recognised qualification provides people with practical skills in teaching English to speakers of other languages. The course aims to develop candidates’ language analysis skills and awareness of cultural factors in language learning. It also addresses the skills and knowledge required for designing and delivering English language training programs for non-native English language learners. Upon graduation, candidates will be able to plan lessons for learners at different levels in a variety of contexts, design and adapt classroom materials, conduct lessons effectively and analyse language for teaching purposes. DURATION Part-time: 20 weeks PREREQUISITES You are expected to demonstrate satisfactory numeracy and literacy skills to undertake this course, have completed year 12 (or overseas equivalent), and be over 18 years old. An individual for whom English is not their first language must also demonstrate an IELTS (Academic) score of 6.5 or similar, though IELTS 7.0 and above is preferred. SELECTION PROCESS All applicants will be asked to complete a pre-training task (Literacy and Numeracy task) to demonstrate their suitability for the TESOL industry. Applicants will need to achieve a level of competency before being accepted into the course. Non-native English speakers are expected to demonstrate an IELTS score or equivalency of 6.5. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES This course may lead to employment in teaching English in Australia or overseas. The Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) (10695NAT) is recognised by the National English Teaching Accreditation Scheme (NEAS) as a minimum qualification for teaching in an ELICOS program or English Language programs in community centres in Australia. FURTHER STUDY OPPORTUNITIES This course will lead to higher level studies in the Diploma of TESOL. Credit transfers may be available into a degree or masters level.
